Army Knowledge Online is essentially what some people describe as a Web portal across at the enterprise level across confidential and non-confidential networks. People with access rights can share emails, store and exchange files, participate in discussion groups, and more.

It is estimated that the majority of deployed soldiers (at least half) use AKO on duty and off duty. The Army Knowledge Online account is mandatory for all upcoming troops, so the portal is used for certain training at various stages of the Army’s career.

In fact, AKO is an integrated platform of a good number of commercial off-the-shelf products, including Appian Business Process Management (BPM) suite technology. Appian is a platform that provides the foundation for the dissemination of information, process management, knowledge sharing, and collaboration across AKO.

How The Army Knowledge Online Started

Army Knowledge Online started as an experiment in the1990s. A project started by the Office of Officer Management created an early version of AKO, called A2OL or America’s Army Online.

The original goal of this project was to create something very similar to today’s AKO, a global system for all soldiers and Army affiliated contractors, civilian employees, foreigners working in Army facilities, etc. Information on the AKO platform is non-confidential/official use only.

The project includes features that are familiar to current AKO users but not necessarily mainstream at the time – such as standardized email addresses, white pages, centralized authentication procedures, and the ability to access content stored on the portal remotely.

AKO Army Login: Army Knowledge Online Login Authorized Users

All active duty, reserve and National Guard soldiers as of October 2010 are required to register for an account on AKO. Army Knowledge Online has two different types of accounts, full accounts and guest accounts. The authorized full account does not need any form of sponsorship to register. The full accounts include the following:

  • Army Retired
  • Contracted ROTC Cadets
  • DA Civilian
  • Future Soldiers
  • Medical Retired
  • NAF Civilian
  • National Guard
  • US Military Academy Cadets

AKO Army Login: Army Knowledge Online Login Guest Account

This is different from a full account, a guest account would require an Army sponsor that has an authorized full account. The guest account includes the following:

  • Army Volunteer
  • Contractor
  • Federal Civilian Agencies
  • Foreign Officer (attached to U.S Army)
  • Homeland Security
  • Incoming DA Civilian
  • Incoming Future Soldier
  • Local National Employee
  • Medical Discharge
  • Military Transition
  • ROTC Cadets (MS I and II)

How to Register with Army Knowledge Online

To have access to the AKO Army Login, you must be an authorized user (see above). New recruits are required to sign up for AKO and these troops will work with their recruiter to set up the accounts.

Those who are already serving may require sponsorship and the credential information of their sponsor to create a new account. “Full” accounts require no sponsor, but Guest accounts do. What follows assumes you have a sponsor or are otherwise authorized to set your account up.

If you are interested in registering on the Army Knowledge Online then you need an authorized user. Recruits need to register with AKO, and these troops will register accounts with their recruiters before they can access AKO Army Login.

Those who are serving already may need the credential information of the guarantor and their sponsorship to create a new account. Sponsors are not required for “full” accounts, but for guest accounts. 

AKO Army Login: How to Apply For AKO Access

All you need to do is get the application form via https://www.army.mil. After clicking “I accept”, you will be redirected to the Enterprise access management page of the Army, where you can create an account with your unique social security number.

You will be asked to choose an account type that suits your position in the Army as an active military member, guard/reserve member, transition military member, contractor, recruit etc. 

The next thing you would need to do is outlined below:

  • Enter your date of birth
  • Provide your sponsor’s AKO username
  • Enter your contact information
  • Provide a secondary email address from any Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, or other accounts
  • Create a password that meets DoD Strong Password guidelines
  • Select security questions and enter your answers
  • Click the “Complete Registration” button

After you have registered, your sponsor would need to approve your newly registered account, and if you need further assistance with the new account, you need to coordinate with the sponsor.

  1. Is there issues with the website? I am unable to get it to pull up regardless of which browser or computer I use. Both the AKO site and EAMS-A site will not open for me.
